This is Yveth from the Water Song, the book project that shashigai and I are working on.

You wouldn't see her like this unless you were pretty deep in the speritu world. To normal people, there wouldn't be anything but a faint glowing silhouette. If that. Even a little light can drown it out. But shift into toren form... or if you are a sperith yourself... and the silhouette solidifies into an actual being.

This isn't literally what she looks like either. Speritu take on layers of illusion, and their forms shift and warp when they're seen from different angles, so you can never be quite sure what you're looking at. When I first saw her six years ago, I thought she was drow. That didn't make sense, because it wasn't D&D and the world didn't have drow. I kept trying to figure out what she was, and at one point tried to write her out of the story completely. It didn't work - the plot didn't make sense without a couple key things she did, and substituting in a different character didn't mesh properly either. So here she is again.

Pen and ink illustration of a black-skinned elven woman in leather armor. She has an obsidian knife in her right hand and she's stepping forward. Her eyes are blank white orbs. There is a spiral behind her and an arc of metal that looks a little like a wing, and her long white hair is flowing out to the side.

Your hands are getting much much better.
I can't say I like her; she gives me the willies. Kind of interesting to see someone so dangerous looking wearing gathered sleeves and a ruffled collar. Who does she think she's fooling? Though I'm willing to bet there's some appeal there.

I think its great.

Yeah I worked hard on the hands. I still don't think they're perfect though, the fingers are too thick and if you opened up the hand around the knife it would be bigger than the other one.

I don't know if she thinks she's fooling anyone, maybe she just likes them that way. Fiona's shirt had similar sleeves so maybe it's just a tirothi style. But I guess that doesn't make sense since she's got a kind of glamour on her and so likely the shirt is part of that too.

it makes sense to me. yveth is sperith and so she would not have the social cues from growing up - she'd only have what she had until she got killed to sperith. that makes for an even better story, because to be as old as she is she'd have had to exist as toren for at least a few years before getting killed.

I do feel a story coming on, something like shikabane hime. It might even be Hsien epic.

This is cool. Her eyes are totally creepy, and I really dig the background.
